Does Speed Impact My Website SEO?

Tom garrigan - founder tpg

According to Google, the average time to load the average mobile landing page to load is 22 seconds, with 53% of visitors attention span waning after 3 seconds! Doesn’t leave a big window of attention span does it?

If your page is slow, search engines have less time to crawl and therefore index your site pages fully. A website is allocated a set time to be “crawled” and if the site is slow to load, website SEO will be impacted as pages crawled will be less and a likely knock on effect to the bounce rate – length of time visitors stay before they leave.

Some Quick Wins To Help Website SEO

First off, for non-technical website owners, check your images. If you have large images, particularly on your home page, are they optimised for speed? Make them no larger than necessary.

On the more technical front, check how many re-directs you have from old to new pages, for example. Have a tidy up and take out any redundant ones to reduce wait time.

Get in touch with your web developer to go through the code and check for any unnecessary/old code that has now been updated or is no longer needed – think of it like a spring clean.

Check your server set up – is it suitable for your needs? Time to change to a more efficient set-up? Consider updating to https if not already done so.

Most of us use a variety of screen sizes, first thing in the morning- checking our email on mobile, desktop during the day and then tablet in the evening – mobile tops and tails both ends of the day of our browsing habits.

Mobile first is a key phrase, meaning that although desktop will always be important, if your site is mobile optimised and loads quickly, it will have a better chance in the organic search rankings and it’s fast speed will have a positive impact on your website SEO.
